Akromion Special Hospital is the largest private orthopedic hospital in Croatia, celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. - Where do international patients getting treatment at the polyclinic come from?
Physicians at Akromion Special Hospital are highly specialized and perform the most complex orthopedic procedures. Many top athletes and other patients underwent successful surgery at Akromion, having arrived from different countries, such as Russia, Hungary, Germany, Romania, the United States, Macedonia, Kosovo, Arab countries and Croatia’s neighbors such as Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.
- What is the percentage of those patients?
The percentage of foreign patients, including aliens living and working in Croatia, is about 10%.
- Where do they stay during treatment, and what are the facilities like?
Akromion Special Hospital provides maximum comfort to its patients during their stay at the hospital. There are 11 rooms available to patients, three of which are single rooms, six are double rooms, and there are two suites as well. Each room is en suite, with a TV set and Internet connection.
Krapinske Toplice, where our hospital is located, has excellent hotels and private accommodation for patients’ families or persons accompanying them.
- What procedures do they typically ask for?
For athletes, we usually perform arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder, knee, hand and foot.
Other patients come to Akromion Special Hospital for joint, hip, knee and shoulder replacement. Akromion Hospital is recognized as a top facility where highly complex orthopedic procedures are performed, such as bone, tendon and ligament repairs and artificial hip, knee and shoulder revisions.
- It is well known that you’ve managed to bring world-class athletes back on the field, including javelin thrower Sara Kolak, gold medalist at Rio de Janeiro Olympics. How challenging is it to treat top athletes’ injuries?
Surgical treatment of top athletes, especially overhead athletes such as Sara Kolak, is very demanding for the surgeon. Surgical procedures, which are today mostly arthroscopic surgeries, must be performed with accuracy so that the joint, in this case the shoulder, is restored to full functionality. The operation is successful if the athlete gets back to pre-injury level of activity.
