About Tunisia
Tunisia benefits from a strategic geographical position, making the country a point of junction between the Arab world, Africa, and Europe. The history of Tunisia is a long swing between Africa, the East, and the West. Medinas, fortresses, Carthaginian and Roman ruins… seven sites and monuments are inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List for their cultural value. Tunisia has achieved a happy synthesis of multiple influences: Andalusian refugees, Italian artisans, and Turkish sponsors have all made their mark here.
The minarets of Testour recall Spanish architecture, the ceramics of Kairouan take up Ottoman motifs, the mausoleums of the Beys – rulers of Tunis – are decorated with marble in the Italian way. Likewise, freed Africans are at the origin of a specific musical style called “stambali.” This cultural richness is also found in gastronomy that shows Berber, Andalusian, and Turkish roots.
